About The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula

The legendary Tom Weiskopf paid remarkable attention to ensuring that the only traditional seaside golf course in Asia was carefully carved out of the native sand dunes on this natural peninsula on Hainan’s stunning, untouched east coast. Mr Weiskopf created the natural landscape including massive dunes and reintroduced local indigenous plant species to combine with the unparalleled breathtaking views to create what will truly go down in history as one of Asia finest golfing creations.

The Dunes – A true masterpiece.

The landscape will give every golfer the feeling that they are experiencing golf in the most traditional and natural settings available in all of Asia. Every golf hole will give the golfer a different experience that will make them feel that they have entered and are experiencing the true and ever-changing beauty of Mother Nature.

The Dunes will play fast and long with the constant element of the ocean wind always changing direction to further complicate the player’s strategy. The immaculate playing conditions including large greens complexes will offer some relief, but the rough and rugged world of the dunes awaits misdirected golf shots.

Within the golfing corridors of the holes, you will find a mix of big mature trees, natural waterways, primary and secondary dunes, spectacular ocean views, seaside vegetation, gentle elevation changes and majestic natural rock outcroppings. Truly a world-class site!

Who Designed The Dunes at Shenzhou Peninsula

Both courses of The Dunes are designed by Tom Weiskopf. His courses are renowned for their strategic design, quality of construction and superb playability, as well as a sense of traditional values. Tom Weiskopf Foreword when I first walked the site where “The Dunes” courses were to be located on Shenzhou Peninsula, alongside the South China Sea, I was excited at the possibility of creating a spectacular seaside golf experience. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to design courses all around the world for over 30 years. The Dunes site is possibly the finest I have ever seen. Why so? Because I felt it had the possibility and long term potential to be one of the premier golf destinations in the world.

A Hidden Treasure

When we first played at the Dunes 2 years ago, after we played the best course at Mission Hills Haikou (both Blackstone and Lava), 8 out of 10 golfers were very determined to say the Dunes is the best. As such if you also like ocean course, for example, NSW Golf Club or Pebble Beach, we would definitely recommend playing the Dunes in Haikou after your have experience the celebrity course from Mission Hills. The Dunes is very much like a strong man, very firm and powerful. As I’m a lady golfer, I stayed at the oceanfront resort and look at the breathtaking view from my balcony and I have a glass of whisky and start to enjoy other good golfer‘s play!

Dunes China

What is the origin of the name “The Dunes”?

The overall design concept for the three courses (East, West and Composite) was to enhance the natural landscape on this site while incorporating the dunes that already existed throughout most of the property. Thus the name “The Dunes” was given to these magnificent golf courses. Each hole would also have its own character and strategy, never duplicating that similarity at any time.
